Themes / Styles issues converting an app from 2.3 to version 4

I'm converting an app from 2.3 to version 4

App converts fine but I'm unable to change the styles or themes

I want to do away with themes but once converted I cannot change the Theme
or apply a new style
(themes changes fine on 2.3 version)

Have I missed a step here ??
