This is my first post. Sorry if I make mistakes, English is not my mothers tongue. I am posting from Buenos Aires - Argentina.
I've just got my Code Charge Studio License. I feel the product is really good.
I am building an Intranet App that supports BCM (Bus.Continuity Mgmt) life cycle. I am planning to deliver the final product including the Operating System + Web Server + Database.
If you have to choose among FreeBSD/Linux/Solaris/Windows for hosting an Apache/PHP/MySQL what would choose?
By the way, I am writing the application usign XP/Apache/PHP/MySQL with no major problems but the license cost matters.
Regards.
Héctor.

If you -must- package and deliver your product, then definitely go with
LAMP. I'd even go a step further and find your own hardware to stick it
on and deliver. A full turn-key solution.
However, I suggest you not package and deliver but provide your Software
as a Service (SAAS) if possible. It'll be much easier to maintain and
update.

Thank you for the idea.
My Business partner and me thought to offer the product thru Internet, but at that time I felt not comfortable we the local ISP and Shared Datacenters. Some of them have a lossy idea of DRP (Disaster Recovery Plan). Imagine, is not a good image hosting a BCM application in a ISP that has not fully developed a contingency plan. Those who are reasonable protected are expensive (we are trying to deal with it).
But your idea trigger the possibility to have a mixture of hardware in the Client DC and the backup in a shared DC, and treat the whole as SAAS.
Thank you again.
Hector.
PD: I've just googled for LAMP GREAT IDEA!!!

if you can really develop a good product the saas model willl provide you with better long term returns and is good for your customer because you will maintain and improve your product. you can still charge an upfront fee for scoping and other consulting work to tailor product to customers needs.
if you are delivering from the web you dont need to use a local host if you arent comfortable with their standard and price. the price you pay will be passed on to the customer - if its important/valuable software you need to sell the importance and value of a quality hosting solution.
you can use a vps server or get a whm/cpanel reseller account. implement ssl for every client - again - sell its value - not its cost.
you must also ensure that you DO have excellent security - both application level, file system level (the o/s will be managed by your hosting provider) and user password security.
dont leave all teh backups to your hosting provider. do a weekly backup of mysql and website to your own computer.
just a few thoughts....

Hello (Hola Hector),
With regards to Apache, MySQL and PHP in Windows I had an excellent experience with this, it is fast, portable and do not install anything in your registry:
The Uniform Server: http://www.uniformserver.com/

Thank you for the comment.
I absolutly agree with the security and backups.
About cost and value, my partner is better selling than me, I hope to improve.

Thank you. I've check their forum and the project seems to be on the net since 2005. Maybe a good ageing for an XAMP.
By the way, I've was also visiting virtualappliances.net. It seems to be a good resource for LAMP.

Also keep in mind that a good server in a good Datacenter will cost just around
200.00us$ each month
for VPS you will get around 59us$ 1GB and 39us$ for 512k

Thank you for the comment. I have an IPOWER.COM account. They seems to have reasonable mesurements (backup, UPS, generators, backbone connection, etc). But up to now I use the service not for business. For offer a service I need to feel secure of the service.
Do you know a kind of ranking or certification for Datacenters?
Regards.

Must of then are just reseller and all of the use one of the mayor Datacenter.
also i will avoid any Hosting company that Sale "Unlimited" anything.
(But that;s a frase that you will heard a lot, but that no mean is a bad Company
just personal opinion)
12us$ for 2000GB harddisk?
Unlimited Bandwith?
just take your time and dont rush to any Hosting Company for Bussines Pourpose.
As for a host there is not a perfect Hosting Company, just search around and get some reviews of them WHT is a good start.
