After my recent problems with CCS I’m reluctant to commit to any more big projects. So when a bespoke eCommerce solution came in for one of my clients I immediately started looking around for alternatives to CCS. There isn’t anything. Bearing in mind that I normally develop in PHP and this app needs to be .NET, switching isn’t a problem, I’ve done it before.

Now I know I can rapidly develop the system with CCS and roughly how long it will take. But will it fall a part at the end as the last one did? (although I suspect it was my fault for upgrading during the project). Nevetheless, I can’t have lots of older versions of CCS so I can maintain all my projects. I currently have V2, V3 and V4, and the original CC.

This is a big decision for me, and I’ve been here before. I love CCS (been using it best part of 10 years) it’s been a great product for me, but I’m fed up with all the niggles that keep happening and the crashes (14 times yesterday morning).

Not sure where to go with this, do I chance it (avoid upgrading) or do I jump?

Not sure about Agile it looks great, but "application servers" I prefer to use my own server. In fact the client will insist that it's hosted on their server.

Waspman,
no, its not a hosted application - it could, if you want.
You can download Dev Tool and server, licencing is done by a subscription with "per user" price for the end user. The devtool is allways free (my information).
If you have big (ecommerce)projects and you will act professional on the market, i think its a good alternative.

Have you seen the pricing of that beast?

No, that's not a direct CodeCharge Studio comparison/alternative.
Different market.

I think the pricing is good, if you sell professional services.

Yeah, I will charge around 2K (GBP) and their will be 1000 users. Like you said DD not really a CCS alternative even if it could do the stuff CCS does.

Does spending thousands on development software qualify as "professional
services"? We've developed software in CCS that manages tens of
thousands of users (hundreds simultaneously). Someday I hope to be a
"professional" at it.

The reality is that NO RAD/IDE software is required to develop web
applications. Absolutely none (other than notepad or vi). The less you
spend to accomplish the same result should be the goal. Value your time
and labor costs to reach the happy medium between your own investments
in hardware and software and the income obtained from your development
projects.

@DD I agree spending large amounts on rad tools isn't necessary (it is for me cos I'm a designer not a coder), but there's a genuine reason and need for tools that will speed up, and in my case enhance my skills.

I want to produce something as quickly as possible, but without compromising quality. Hand coding in note pad isn't an option, not if I want to keep the client happy and pay the mortgage.

Products like CCS fill a real need, and whilst this post might seem like me having a go at CCS, I'm definitely not! It is a wonderful product, I wish YES would double the price increase their development and marketing budget and tell the world about it.

Sorry everyone:)

BTW Just had a look at Code onTime; again looks good, but very restrictive when I think about what I(with my very basic coding skills) have been able to do with CCS. And they do want thousands for the unlimited version.

I think I'm talking myself round:)

If the main problem for you is CCS crashing, I would think it would be better to spend some time on getting the system optimized so it does not crash. I use CCS several days a week and it runs well for me. Have you tried to bulletproof your hardware, creating a simple minimal configuration that has no 3rd party drivers or non-stock subsystems?
Transferring to a new framework just before a new project means not only learning a new system but also tracking down a whole new set of problems. None of the new development environments has as long a history so they are still going through the problems YesSoftware was 8 years ago. Additionally, it will be hard to get up to speed with any new system to such an extent that your 10 years invested in CC/CCS provides you.

I found a lot more stability when I switched from Windows Xp to Windows 7.
Also, if required, upgrade dotnet from 2 to 3.5.

We are using the latest version of CCS on Windows XP regularly patched and crashes are extremely rare.

A few months ago I tried some tools that seemed better than CCS, but I was very disappointed.
Of course I would like a more lively CCS but I still think it is a good product with good support.

Also, I cannot recommend starting a new project with a new tool.
