I started using CCS some time ago to write an web app for a cataloguing system for a architectural practice. It has been chugging away now for 4 years without missing a heartbeat.
I have not done anything else since then, I have dropped in on yes from time to time and was surprised things hadn't change much over the years. I received an email from YES today and was surprised with the new release.
Its looks like it has been a couple of months now since CCS5 has been released and I am interested in your opinions on whether it's the same visual IDE in new clothing. Have they really improved the visual IDE and its usability, stability and capability?
Thanks in advance.
James

Hi James,
I am really happy with v.5 although many others have had problems as you can see from the forum. The usability is greatly improved from v.4 and I find the speed and new features a joy to work with.
There are still bugs but all I have encountered so far have been very easy to work around. If you happen to use Artisteer as well v.5 really comes into it's own as far as design goes. Very, very nice and easy to implement. I am very happy to have upgraded.
One point to note is that I have not upgraded any v.4 systems to v.5. All my new systems have been created from scratch using v.5.
Hope this helps a little.

Hi James
V5 is pretty and seems quicker in most functions. I find that it is actually a little slower in use because more mouse clicks are needed for some simple editing like changing table parameters. So far, it has been solid and runs quite well on Win 7.
I have had a few problems with old V4 projects after publishing pages, not displaying but that might be due to changing in configuration settings I have not discovered. Building from scratch has not be a problem however.
I got Artisteer a while back but it never really was worth the effort to integrate into V4 CCS, it was easier to trouble shoot and modify just creating my own templates and style sheets in Dreamweaver. But finally, with Ver5 CCS and the latest version of Artisteer, they work together very well. It is easy to create a template/master page and have its design control the appearance of the project. The results are more modern looking pages although heavier in file size and count.
The new Data Dictionary alone is worth the upgrade price but little things like switching from Design mode to HTML finally after years of requests, places the cursor at the line of HTML that is related to the Design mode cursor position. There are more AJAX functions built in.
I hope the shot of cash flow that this upgrade generated causes YesSoftware to justify focusing on CCS again. It was a matter of faith and ultimate patience waiting for some positive sign without any word from the company as to whether they killed off the project or were working on it, or just abandoned it. I have never seen a company so little concerned with communications with its loyal followers. It does not take much, just a update news letter a couple times a year, updating the web site more often than every 5 years, or even posting something here occasionally to keep people hopeful that their development environment had not disappeared.
I did contact support once a few months ago and found that all records of my purchases dating from CC ver 1 was not present, so I had to buy a new license for 4.3. That did not make me happy. But Ver5 was an easier purchase to justify.

I'm not so sure the title thread is justified.
Anyway, I am an old user from V2 days. We just purchased a couple of V5 licenses,
and this week I deployed my first production app from it.
We are very, very happy with V5. Is it perfect? Nothing is, but - it's great, and
it will enormously improve our productivity.

I gave up, temporarily, with version 3.x. I had lots of problems, back
then, with the initial setup. When I asked CCS tech support (which I
had paid for), for assistance, all they did was refer me to the help
files. I couldn't find the answer in the Help files, and let CCS know
that. They responded with the same answer. I finally asked if this was
some kind of auto-generated response, and they replied No, in a snide
manner. No help from them, whatsoever. I built a couple of apps, with
assistance from some of my company techs, but gave up CCS, soon after that.
With version 5, there were still some setup issues, but no show-stoppers
and all of it was a matter of research and trial & error.
So the short answer to your question is yes, CCS5 is usable and even
likeable. Worth the upgrade, or an outright purchase.
