What's the best way for a newbie to learn CCS?

I'm a newbie to CCS with next to no programming experience. I've gone through the CCS tutorial and I've learned an amazing amount, but I feel like I have a long way to go. Where do you suggest I go next to get more in depth learning? The online help isn't much help for a beginner. It would be nice if there were more tutorials with more examples but I don't think such a thing exists (at least not yet). Any suggestions? The "tips and articles" seem to be geared toward more advanced users. For what it's worth, I'm generating ASP code that ties into back-end SQL Server databases.

Here's an example of where my learning has hit a wall. It would be nice to be able to select a value from a list box and have that value populate several fields in the record form (i.e. type in customer# and have CCS fill in name and address fields) but I have no idea where to begin with this.

I hate to tell ya, but your biggest wall will probably be your lack of coding experience. I don't consider my self a programmer (out of respect for those that can code circles around me), but I know how to read and write ASP. CCS is designed to be code heavy. Most of the fancy stuff that I have had to do has required me to dive in and figure out how CCS puts things into its resulting code based on what I was doing with the IDE. It has taken quite a bit of trial and error (brute force method) and I probably have worn out my welcome with my couple of questions to the support E-Mail (being fair they hung with me and provided excellent support).

As for the design work, I edit the HTML in Dreamweaver which helps alot.

When working with the databases you really need to understand how the grids send information between the pages. I just had to dig under the covers to figure it out for my purposes. I really did not find the tutorials to be nearly as much help in CCS as I did in CC.

This is probably not what you wanted to hear. I found the product to have a little bit of a steep curve, but it ended up not being nearly as much of a hurdle as I expected it to be. This environment is much friendlier than some others that I have worked in and am begining to use it for several of my projects.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I would like to suggest to look at the examples. Mainly the Employee is a great start. Both in CC and CCS I started with this example and did found out what / how it was working.

Try to rebuild the same app and you will see some more new items which you can add in your own solutions.

Success and if CCS is to much just start with CC. CC is for no programmers and CCS for programmers. By the way your CC solutions look if you are a pro programmer for endusers.

Proofen technology is always the best!

Regards,
Marco

Study the custom functions that Yes has developed specifically for this IDE. They are available in ASP and PHP format in the help pages. Print them out for reference. You will need to know how to use them, for example: entering custom SQL code.

This is good to know, because you WILL have to do some custom coding at some point. Knowing the functions and classes will be benefitial.

One last thing. CCS is not novice-friendly. It really is designed with intermediate coding experience assumed. This is my opinion though.

The best way to learn anything is
look at the examples
steal from the examples
make lots of mistakes (1 mistake made = 1 lesson learned)
Ask questions (only questions prefaced with "I know this is dumb, but," are dumb questions.
Apply what you've learned to what you need to do
Help others.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Thanks for the feedback everybody! Two questions...

1. What are the "Yes" custom functions that several people have referred to. Are these the sample projects under Internet and Intranet in the Program Files folder?

2. For a novice starting out...working in an NT/IIS/SQL Server environment...what scripting language would you recommend that I learn - PHP or ASP? (or ASP.NET...others?). From briefly glancing at the alternatives, PHP seems a little more straightforward and intuitive to me but will ASP give me better SQL Server support and compatibility with Microsoft apps?
