Developers, please pay attention. VirtualBox is your friend and will be
perhaps THE MOST IMPORTANT development tool you'll use.

Learn it and use it. It'll save you tons of time and headaches trying
to figure out little nuances with your environment when running other
tools such as CodeCharge Studio, Artisteer, etc.

My biggest issue with virtualization software is that I cannot run for example VirtualBox, and WindowsXP mode and for example Windows Phone emulator at the same time...

I know it's not like running 3 instances of MS Paint, but still it is problematic.

Also if you are know what you are doing, know how to set up development environment, then there seldom are any environment issues you encounter.

But yeah, separation and portability of virtualized machine is great, but not perfect ;-)

Therein is the problem that I'm seeing reported over and over in this
forum. Folks can't seem to isolate work from play, so their development
machines end up with gobs of nonsense. Thus they yell at CodeCharge as
if they've done something wrong.

VirtualBox allows you to isolate your "work" environment without the
burdens of apps like Skype and Angry Birds getting in the way.

Hi DataDoIT,

I have been toying with this idea for some time now and after your post, I think I have to try this. I use Win XP sp.3 for everything but would like to install a Linux system as well. From their docs it appears that the only one without hassles is Solaris.
I wonder, if you have a minute, if you could let me know what your host and guest OS's are. Hopefully you have a Linux distribution as a guest and I can go from there. I doubt that things like Navicat (windows) can interact with MySQL installed in the VB etc. etc.
Any tips would be great.

Thanks.

I have Win7 Pro 64 as the host. I have oodles of guests. For CCS, the
way I use VB is a guest for DotNet programming, a guest for Java
programming, and a guest for PHP programming. They're all the same Win7
Pro 64. All software uses the same licenses.

I have toy guests for Fedora, CentOS and OSX Snow Leopard. There is no
interaction between the guests and hosts, except for the occasional
folder sharing.

The point is my host is where I do all of my mail, video conferencing,
VoIP, chat, YouTwitFace, etc., and when I'm ready to program, I launch
my work environment. If something gets hosed in one of my work
environments for whatever reason, it's as simple as a snapshot rollback
and I'm back in business.

VirtualBox is a programmer's dream come true, and it fits perfectly with
CodeCharge's multi-environment, multi-language featureset.

I think Yes Software could make some money by selling not just CCS PE
for PHP, or CCS for ASP, etc., but also sell actual machine images for
use in VirtualBox that includes CCS, IIS, WAMP, or XAMMP with Tomcat,
with everything pre-configured along with proper ODBC drivers, DSN
strings, and sample projects. I venture to guess that 80% of their
support requests are related to improper end-user configuration.

Who would be willing to pay perhaps $250 USD for a Win7Pro64 machine
image that includes CCS PE for PHP along with all of the necessities
mentioned above, while also eliminating that annoying single database
connection and 100 page limit in PE?

Thanks so much for the detailed info. Really an eyeopener.
Has anyone had a look at Script Case.

It is quite costly but if you download their trial, the support is very, very good. Not sure if this flows into 'when you buy it' but does look promising.

Very Strange. If I spell the product above as one word, I cannot post. Hmmmm.

It's a competing product.
