Hi Everyone,

Not new but still green doing dynamic web pages. I'm at that point that I should choose between PHP or ASP.

Let me have it :)

BTW, I'm mostly in a windows world.

I'll wade into this question ...
There is also Cold Fusion (which is my favorite especially for beginners) as it is a tag based language and if you understand basic html tags, the time to learn to work with CF is relatively small.
CF seems to be code within HTML while ASP is code that writes HTML and PHP is somewhere in between. CF is the easiest to read and learn of the three.
By saying you live in a windows world, I'd say CF and ASP would be my choices as PHP has stability issues running on window servers. And if you aren't a case sensitive person (like windows is forgiving), then PHP is not a good choice. Just my two cents

there is a reason why within 2 years php has become the #1 scripting language on the web (see netcraft). It runs circles around asp (which is now outdated with .net anyhow)

I prefer PHP/MySQL
(This is the best choice for Me)

I have tried MySQL, heaven's my witness. It fails in comparison to what I can do with MS-SQL.

Ditto on any other scripting language, and you should not even consider ASP if youc an move straight to ASP.NET. The performance is much better on anything else I saw out there, not to mention the overall cost and re-development efforts on most other scripting languages. Then we havn't started on Web Services - the list goes on and on.

So, my bias leans to ASP.NET, C# and MS-SQL.

I started with ASP it is simple, quick but very limited on capabilites compared to others. This is a language for simple apps. Oh ya it's now replaced with .NET

PHP is very good, it is as simple as ASP with less restrictions. If I was making simple apps I would do this.

Cold Fusion I recently started using it and I like it alot. The previous statement about it going out the door is BS. Cold Fusion MX whick CC doesnt currently support is built on J2EE is going to become hot once again. But I would not start here until CC supports MX

JSP By far the best most robust language available and your salary will reflect it if you can master this complicated language. I myself prefer to start with the hardest so this would be my choice. I currently write is JSP. This is most large corporaion standards and if you look at some of the large application providers they use JAVA.

JSP if you want to work for a large corporation. Hard to master
PHP/ASP if you are making simple little pages.

Good luck and happy programming.

USE PHP

Better Documentation

Don't have to buy extras for $$$ to do basic things ( uploading, encrypting, creting thumbnails etc

Cheaper servers

A lot Faster

I prefer the LAMP (Linux,Apache,MySQL,PHP) solution. Our company now has 3 LINUX servers that cost us $0.00 We use them for our internet, intranet and as a NAS device. PHP is very robust with plenty of help and free examples (for cut and pasters) available. There are some very slick, mature, Open Source projects that can be utilized. 10 million domains use PHP. MySQL is used by Yahoo and the Census Bureau web site.

Another good point is that Apache, PHP, MySQL is multiplatform based. I hear that the new version of Apache is blazing fast on Window servers.

Good luck and have fun with whichever one you decide.
