I am new to PHP and going crazy trying to debug complex algorithoms without any debugging tools ie, IDE. I don't know if I will use PHP in the future(though I like it) and don't want to fork out a ton of money for a top-of-the-line IDE. For now, I be happy just to be able to step the the scripts and display variable contents. I just bought CC2.0 and don't think I'm ready to upgrade to CC Studion yet, but would if it has a debugger like Visual Basic. Does it?
If not, does anybody know where I can get a free one, or inexpensive one?
Also, traditionally I am a VB, VB script developer and trying to determine whether to go the .NET route or switch to PHP. I know PHP runs in most any environment and I know that MicroSoft tries to lock you in. But there are good and bad points about both. My biggest concern is my productivity, since my clients don't like paying big bucks for development, and of course stability. I find that Microsoft offers good help screens and documentation that give me the answers I need fairly fast and that so far, with PHP, I am spending to much time looking for answers. I'm sure a good $2000 IDE would help but it's beyond my budget and I'm weary of buying from companies that are here today and gone tommorrow. Anyone have any thoughts on these issues.

I do not see how Microsoft locks you in to their products. If you use C#, you can choose from several compilers on several platforms; one is Mono.

Here's a handy tool:
http://www.activestate.com/Products/Komodo/
They have a Educational/Personal use price as well as a professional price.
Well worth checking out, although it is a bit of a resource hog.
