I work in the HR department of a company of 300 highly skilled employees. I love IT stuff, building internal and external websites and my Personnel intranet website build in Dreamweaver MX has been a success so far. At the moment I would like to develop this internal website further in order to make use of database driven features. I am not an IT expert of course, but I am thinking of having a little search engine, a link adding page, an employee directory (even if this feature exists already but it is done by IT staff), a discussion forum, an on-line-leave-requesting feature and so on.

The approach I like the most is to make use of existing open source software resources, by following some simple instructions and by cut and pasting programs and by doing so creating nice things. This approach works when i can freely choose the webserver (and I believe that UNIX servers have much more to offer with regard of open source applications than any one else) and the database (here I believe that the best applications are on MySQL). This approach works when I can choose freely the configuration of the web hosting package for building external websites.

Unfortunately this approach does not work with the company intranet where the server is Windows and where the database is Oracle. Here I cannot find any open resources. I have asked the IT people in my company to let me have an internal Unix server and MySQL, but the solution is too expensive to maintain such a server for so little use.

Can Codecharge be of help for me to integrate Windows with Oracle? Are there any quicker fix possible? What sort of training should i do first? I would be happy to study something alone, but do not know where to start.

The questions are many. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Hendrick,
Try looking at the site http://www.aspapp.com They have some good ASP products that right out of the box work. The apps work with SQL and access databases. Take a look, you never know!

If you like doing stuff - try CC or CCS - it is fun and as easy as DW MX.

I started with CC and went to VS.NET & CCS
Windows or Unix & MS SQL Server, Oracle or MySql - stay with what is available and affordable. I know ASP & ASP.NET and I'm very happy with win2000 server and MS SQL Server. Oracle would work fine also.
You can search for "the best of the best" forever.
