I've been trying to find a application that functions as BOTH a
document management system and as a web portal for news.
Most of the groupware stuff doesn't really handle discussions and
comments but postnuke, phpwebsite and such don't seem to have a way to
have a library of documents for people.
I have a small organization of friends that I want to be able to log
into a website, look at a calendar of events, have some discussions on
topics and to be able to look at documents in a document library on
the site. I'd like to be able to have different levels of access to
documents so some are in an admin group, some in a special group and
some in a normal, public group.
Does anyone know of a software package (open source) that does all of
this?

Yes, I know.
I've been using DeskNow for this proposal, and believe me - it rocks!
Freeware, great suport, need to see to believe.
