I am new at the software and would like to know whether or not the creation of web pages requires the user to have a database programme on their computer to interact with the Studio while designing, and if so does the database have to be of the same type as the database software used on the host server?

Yes you need a database. If your isp allows acces to your database that drives the website you can use the actual database for development. This is however often not the case so you will probably need a database local to develop. it does not have to be the same db as on your webserver but if the development database is different from the production database you have to be carefull. Do not use tricks on the development db that are not supproted on the production db. I think it's wiser to use the same type of db.
