how do you validate a form field in ccs 2.2?

I have a text box that is not submitting to a database and I would like to make sure that there is at least one character put into that field. If there is nothing, i want an error message. CCS seems to change the rules for input based on whether or not it is pulling or sending data to a db. I have tried about 6 different methods and none of them work. The canned javascript seems to not work no matter what I do.

Note to developers: Go back to Codecharge, look at how easy some of the things to do were and put them into studio. Put a little box there for a field in the format or properties that says "require this field."

It is that simple! Just select the field and in the properties manager (the bottom right side) you should see a required property. If you do not see the properties of the text field then you may7 have inserted it from the html toolbox instead of the forms toolbox.
