How to manipulate the SQL Result using the befor show event?

Hello,
I want to to changings on a field in a sql result.
I tried to use the before show event.
But I don't know the code to get the field values.
I'm working with php. So, the turorial, which is for using ASP couldn't help
me.
Any ideas?
