Hello,
I just installed PHP4 with IIS5.
I compiled a test app in PHP w/o templates, and it seems pretty fast.
Is PHP worth getting into over the other languages like ASP or ASP.NET?
Thanks

Frank,
It all depends on whether you want to stay (forever) married
to Windows. If you can't ever see yourself going to Linux, Solaris,
etc., you might as well stay with ASP. If you are putting up a lot of
sites, then the M$ royalites could be a burden. PHP is easier to learn
than ASP.
BTW, Apache 2 has just been released and it supposedly works
better than the previous version on Win2k. IIS I believe limits you to
the # of connections you can have unless you upgrade it from M$.
A webserver using PHP, Apache, Linux, and MySQL, everything is
free and more secure. If you need to expand to a dozen machines, it
will only cost you the additional hardware. If you tried that with M$
products, you will need to pay quite a bit more. So if you are only
doing a couple of sites, ASP should work fine. But the more sites you
build using PHP, Linux, Apache, MYSQL, the more you save and generally
speaking Linux is more secure than IIS (mostly because everyone picks
on IIS servers).

Thanks Brent,
I like the idea of using PHP, Apache, Linux and MySQL and not only knowing
ASP.
Thanks for the link also.

Hi Frank,
I was testing out the CodeCharge Studio and found the design terminology is
entirely different.
In the attached image, what am I suppose to do in order to add another menu
item?
Thanks.

Frank,
Take a look at "PHP for the world wide web"-Larry Ullman which
is a good intro to PHP. You'll be writing PHP code in just a few
minutes after opening the book. His "PHP Advanced for the world wide
web" will take you to the next level. His books don't bog you down in
a lot of reading. And finally "PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Luke
Welling and Laura Thomson is quite thorough. All books discuss how to
use PHP with MySQL and Apache.

Hi Kelvin,
I would select the table and add another row, then add a link to that row.
You could also go into code mode and add another <tr><td>href....
HTH
Nice talking to you.

of these offer this feature?

Hi Frank,
Thanks. Actually, earlier I tried copying directly from the previous cell,
insert a new row, and paste the contents. Thereby, amending the properties
of the contents copied. But after amending the properties of the contents
in the new cell, the properties of the contents from which I copied also
changed.
It was strange, that was why I asked to make sure that I have not taken any
wrong steps.
Thanks again.

Frank,
"PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson
(highly recommended in PHP circles) does create a real world web apps
with MySQL and PHP. It includes creating a shopping cart, mail list
manager, web forums and is about 800 pages. I mentioned Larry Ullman's
books because they are much smaller and will be a good intro to PHP.
Rather than doing a lot of reading about syntax, Ullman gets you
writing PHP script in just a few minutes and shows you what PHP can
do. You could probably get through "PHP for the world wide web" in a
week and it builds confidence. Armed with this knowledge you can then
tackle the much bigger book "PHP and MySQL Web Development". Also let
me know when you have PHP installed and I'll send you a freeware
debugger for it. :)

Brent,
I have it installed under windows XP and tied into IIS5.
it seems to work good, I generated a test app in CC to try it out.
Thanks for the debugger ub advance.

Frank,
I had tried it last year and didn't like it. Too buggy and
back then the docs were written in french. Parlez vous francais? Like
most things French, it did look good!<g> I'll e-mail you something
