I added a field called "Effective_Month" to my Access table. I am not able
to integrate the new field into my existing maintenance form or my main list
table. I'll create a text box, for example, and clicking on the control
source, the field is simply not in the list.

I remember seeing this problem in MacromediaMX. They had a refresh button
that would flush out the old cache and re-read the database. Is there a
similar button in CCS?

Is there a way to do this without having to regenerate the entire
Maintenance Form / List again?

Thanks,
Bob

All you need to do is right click the Connection in the project explorer and
shoose "Refresh". Some dialog boxes (where you reference the datasource)
also had a button for "refresh" to requery the database for structural
changes to its tables, etc.

I hope you are not running into the "missing columns" problem that a couple
of others have reported here recently. If the refresh does not work PLEASE
log a formal report to http://support.codecharge.com so they are aware that
you have run into this problem, too.

Hi Don,

I did a refresh. On the maintenance form (SplitData_maint) the new field
appears (datasource1.jpg), but on the search/table's (SplitData_list) grid,
the new field is not there (datasource2.jpg), so I can't add that field's
column even if I manually type in the field name and try to trick it. I
uninstalled and reinstalled CCS as was suggested in the earlier thread that
you referenced, but that didn't fix. I suspect that with the
SplitData_list, its getting the datasource field list from a cached file
somewhere, that isn't being refreshed by the "Refresh" command. Either that
or it has heartburn with the field name Effective_Date.

The work-around is to completely delete the search/table SplitData_list, and
use the wizard to generate a new one, but that's kinda time consuming since
I've done so much customization.

I will submit a formal report to http://support.codecharge.com.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

This is interesting. What database driver are you using? I always use
"Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for Access", not the "Provider for ODBC". And I
never build ODBC datasources that I then connect to by DSN. I always define
the connection the so-called "DSN-less" way, putting the complete connection
string into the connection definition. The more generic ODBC drivers have
been kind of wierd in the past so I avoid them.

How do you do it?

DonB

P.S. Thanks for the email, too.

Hi Don,

I think I'm DSN-less too.
Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data
Source=C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\split\database\data.mdb;Persist Security
Info=False

I created a case as you suggested, and they had a couple of suggestions
which I tried, then they asked me to email the project and Access file which
I did this morning.

BTW, when you have a connection string like this in CCS, and you're
developing on your local machine, CCS is expecting a "Test" copy of the
Access database on the local machine at
C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\split\database\data.mdb, and when you publish to your
server, a "Live" copy of that Access database needs to be at
C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\split\database\data.mdb on the server. How do you (or
can you) setup the string to always work with the "Live" version?

Thanks!
Bob

That's exactly the way I set them up. Further puzzlement as to why the
problem occurs... Hmmm

In my case, it was convenient to put the database in the same path/location
and leave the checkbox "Same as Design" checked on the server connection
properties, If you uncheck that, then you can edit the server connection
string to whatever you need it to be, but...

There is still the issue of publishing to a test machine, and to a
production machine. If these require different paths to the MDB, then you
have to remember to edit the connection for ether case before you publish (I
have a hard time not forgetting details like that). That is why it was so
convenient to (locally) just create the same path as the server. This way,
no matter what I am doing, the database is always in the right location.

I have requested Yes to consider multiple publishing choices to help us in
situations like this.

Is there a way to delete and regenerate just the grid with the wizard? The
modifications that I don't want to lose are astetic changes to the search
section, and custom filtering code. Also when this happened in the past,
the I couldn't figure out a way just regenerate just the SplitData_list
(the search w. grid) by itself without redoing both the search/grid, and the
maintenance form together using the wizard. My maintenance form has
extensive customization with drop boxes and stuff, and I don't want to have
to start over with it.

Thanks,
Bob

Mmmm, not really, if I correctly assume all the aesthetic stuff is contained
within the grid.

You'd probably be better off building a new connection (you should see the
updated column collection in the new connection) and then "pointing" the
existing controls to it. Still some manual labor, but that's the best I can
come up with. I think you'll have a problem if you created the new
connection, deleted the old one and renamed the new one to the name of the
old one, but you could try it and see (save everything first!). I am not
sure what happens to references to the old connection once you delete it -
it may break the controls that referred to it.

Good news... Operator Error on my part. The CCS found it quickly.

"In fact the newly added field appears in the field list, but you do no see
it because it is not checked to be included into select statement. Open Data
Source dialog of SplitData form (SplitData_list page) and open Visual Query
Builder. You'll see the all field except new field are checked. This is CCS
feature: if you do not select the field to be included into select query (if
asterisk "*" is not checked to select all field) the new fields added to
tables after the form is created in CCS are not made checked automatically.
"

Thanks,
Bob

A suggestion: I never use the query builder in CCS. It is quick and easy
way to augment the basic table with FK lookups, but it also means you can
inadvertently discard that "perfect query" you've written. I always write
queries on the database and use them as if they were ordinary tables. that
way I never lose a query by dropping a grid (a couples times I did go from
regular to editable and/or just decided to recreate the grid) and forgetting
about the query behind it. That also means I control the field list on the
query not in CCS.

BTW, I prefix all my views with "v" as part of the naming convention I
follow. I prefix views that are used to drive things like grids with vGUI.
The "vGUI views may use the "v" views and this technique helps me keep
things organized. I usually drive grids with views so I resolve foreign-key
"id" values to their human-readable names, then (when I have the grid paired
with a record control) drive the record control directly from the table or a
custom-insert/update/delete to ensure datasource updatability (it is easy to
create a view that is NOT updatable).

I didn't think I did either ;). I suspect that the "Select *" is selected
by the wizard only for the maintenance forms, and not the search/grid
procedures, which lead to me not being able to see the new field.

I'm having second thoughs about views or anything fancy on the database
side. I've used Access as a back-end for an e-commerce site. Now I have a
problem. The Access file is now about 70 meg and growing. Since I used
Views, that limits my choice of database back-ends. My problem is that
MySQL (free) doesn't support views or stored procedures. Looks like M$ SQL
Server is my easiest, but most expensive choice. If the views were left in
CCS, I would think that would give you more choices on the back-end.

See ya,
Bob

BTW, I prefix all my views with "v" as part of the naming convention I
follow. I prefix views that are used to drive things like grids with vGUI.
The "vGUI views may use the "v" views and this technique helps me keep
things organized. I usually drive grids with views so I resolve foreign-key
"id" values to their human-readable names, then (when I have the grid paired
with a record control) drive the record control directly from the table or a
custom-insert/update/delete to ensure datasource updatability (it is easy to
create a view that is NOT updatable).
