Hi
Would like to know if the feedback from CodeCharge users matches the
CodeCharge marketing spiel?
Thanks in advance.

For a version 1.0 product...yes. I love it. It really got me up and
running fast!

I started as a visual-only developer with drumbeat-2000. Then learned some
of the aspects of coding. This is a great product.

PS....I put the Bookstore sample online:

Check it the demo at:

Jeff thanks for the feedback. I couldn't help noticing the drumbeat url
below. Is Macromedia interested in this product?

Absolutely! I manage our county's intranet. We do a lot of database
applications that would take forever when I had to hand code the pages. Now
I can put a useable app out in just a few days and then take my time
tweaking it and making it nice. Since I'm the only programmer for our
intranet CodeCharge has been a real God Send!

No. I am a Drumbeat-2000 user that has a website to support the community.
I do not work for MM.

NO Macromedia isn't interested in Drumbeat2000 they own it. Macromedia
bought Drumbeat2000 and turned it into Macromedia DreamWeaver UltraDev.

You should follow the thread a little closer. <g>

The other post asked if MM was interested in Code Charge, not DrumBeat!

What I responded to was:

"Jeff thanks for the feedback. I couldn't help noticing the drumbeat url
below. Is Macromedia interested in this product?"

Which I read as "Is Macromedia interested in Drumbeat". If I'm wrong then
please excuse my ignorance.

This is one of the BEST proggies that I have EVER used! ESPECIALLY for it being version 1.0.
It has allowed me to FINALLY whip out web apps in HOURS not days... This is a TRUE rad
environment for the web. And it supports the 2 best languages.. PHP and Perl. :)

I was a lead beta for the UltraDev project. I have already given Scott
Unterberg @ MM the heads-up regarding the data-centric nature of CodeCharge
and why it is far superior to the current iteration of UltraDev.

I started programming in 1978 at the database level on VAX PDP/11s in DiBOL.
It has been kind of humorous watching all of these visual folks invent
application development for themselves with the advent of the WWW. The
problem with the web is the dichotomy that exists between web design and
application(business logic) design. We now have a whole crop of 'almost
programmers' who started as user interface and 'visual' designers.
Dreamweaver has been a tremendous tool in enabling these folks in getting
their visual pages to the web. While Drumbeat and UltraDev solved a lot of
the problems with bridging the gap between page design and application
development, UltraDev's focus is still on the visual frontend. Consequently,
the tool itself contributes to poor application architecture as data and
data relationships are not the focus.

While Drumbeat and UltraDev are superior to not having any RAD at all, I was
initially very negative about the UltraDev product and still have
reservations about the database automation capabilities from the application
architecture view. When you leave the world of pure visual presentation, old
concepts like entity relationship or function process modeling should be the
starting point of any serious application. The database architecture is the
single most important aspect with regard to information flow. From there,
getting the data in and out are nearly semantic. Though UltraDev is a
phenomenal tool, it still contributes to poorly architected applications and
renders a tremendous amount of redundant, inefficient code.

UltraDev provides a generic way to perform ADO functions, but is still
focused too heavily on the presentation perspective. ie... you create the
recordset and query separate from the form, then you require that the form
be manually laid out. Once the form is manually laid out, you have to double
check to make sure that your form fields automatically associate (and
sometimes they don't) to the table field name. The entire process is still a
design focus. I know that some guys have tried to develop some third-party
form/DB extensions, but they are very lightweight.

YesSoftware has come at it from the other end. They are putting a pretty
good tool together that makes the database architecture the center of the
application and pages. All pages and forms are parameterized rendered from
the database field and query association, with the page template and
intermidiary logic being slotted between the data
presentations/transactions. The result is a consistently cleaner and
streamlined application while also providing for a nice template
architecture that can be pulled into the UltraDev environment for
modification. Plus, they have some language support that I think you
need.... Perl and PHP with both WIN and UNIX file type support.

Honestly, I have stopped using the internal UltraDev behaviors et al in lieu
of using CodeCharge as a starting point and manually tweaking the source as
needed.

I think codecharge and ultradev are two different animals.
I've been using dreamweaver since it came out. I was proudly one of the
first people to download it from the MM web site.

I was also one of the first to use Ultradev. I hate it.
Codecharge is a superior program in every way. Since regular dreamweaver
supports ASP and the other languages I work with, I find myself with no use
for a program like Ultradev.

Considering how badly macromedia butchered flash with the latest release, I
don't know if I'd trust them with a program like Codecharge.
That's really all I have to say on the subject.
