Ricky,
The MyODBC driver does not have to be installed on the database server. It
is need on the client machine which shall be accessing the database. Install
the MyODBC driver on your local machine and when you are setting up the
connection to your database server, specify the IP address of the server
machine and the port if it is different from the MySQL default port (3306).
You will also need to specify your authentication details (login name and
password). Ask your ISP for the IP address or qualified domain name of the
database server.

It all depends who's rules, and on who's server:

Some ISP's (ex. HOSTPRO) don't allow any connection to MySQL but localhost
for jailed virtual server (BSDI) environments. They do allow connection on
the SGI Unix boxes (no shell), and on the new Freedom 100/200/300 (freeBSD)
servers (full shell).

PHPMYADMIN - can be installed on servers without ODBC (port 3306) access.
Hostpro in fact has a "lite" version of it built into their "VADMIN" control
panels.
Hostpro - (owned by Micron) just sold out to VALUE WEB so it could be
downhill for them.

HE.NET (Hurricane Electric) - has fully functional PHP/MySQL on LINUX with
shell, for as little as $10.00/mo. They are one of the primary
mirror/distribution points for MySQL.

Don't be afraid to try a different ISP to get what you or your client needs.

ISP's are in a shakeout period right now. Many unprofitable firms will
disappear soon.

My way to deal with the problem for the design/test phase was to take an
"older" pc
(celeron or PII 300 will do very nicely) and load FreeBSD.
