Hello,

I'm just starting developing database web apps and need some advise.
I am a senior programmer, I develop in AS/400, Delphi and VB.

I recently purchased ASPExpress before finding out about Codecharge.

My company wants be to develop database driven web apps.

1. How happy are you with Codecharge?
2. Can you edit the code generated from within Codecharge?
3. Can it generate an edit form that allows a field to be populated via a
combo box that looks up the value in another database. I want to lookup a
customer name in the contacts database and assign it to the orders database.
I can't see how this is done in codecharge.
4. If I purchase Codecharge, do you have an update for a competative
product? I just purchased ASPExpress.
5. If not and I purchase it for 150.00, how many updates will I get at this
price and how frequent are they.
6. How flexible is codecharge for developing using the latest features in
web apps like flash, I'm looking to add features to make my web apps stand
out.
7. How does Codecharge compare to others like dreamweaver, codefusion,
frostpage, Visual InterDev?

Thanks for the help...

Very happy.

Code generated, the answer is no. But you may edit the within your project
file. Afterwhich, you generate the code according to the language you
selected.

Basically, the terminology here will be a bit different. You select and
store them in certain part of the database, then you process it; similar to
the shopping cart.

Not of any I know of.

Any updates they issued, normally quartery and you got all the updates
within a year.

Well... flash..... You should populate your flash on the main page, and
provide a link to the application written in Codecharge.

> 7. How does Codecharge compare to others like dreamweaver, codefusion,
> frostpage, Visual InterDev?

No need to compare. Just download the Trial version (it is fully
functional) and you will be convinced. The new version due to be released
by June/July will incorporate flexiblity of dropping database components
onto HTMLs created by dreamweaver.... Just a few months away. And... none
of the other products like dreamweaver, codefusion, frontpage, visual
Interdev provide you the flexibility of generating the same application for
different platforms; PHP, PERL, Cold Fusion, JSP, ASP...

Thanks.

Please note that we have delays with the version 2.0 (hey, we're in software
business :-) and we expect Beta version in July-August, with possible final
release date in September.
We promise though that the wait will be worth it :-)

No. As good as can be this product, it is a serious drawback for many users.
That was the same for Macromedia/Elemental Software Drumbeat . This peace of
software compared to nothing to generate ASP/JSP pages, but I think that one
of the reasons why Macromedia abandoned this product was the lack of hand
coding capability.

This mean that if you have to modify your generated code manually, any new
generation will erase your modifications -:((

A workaround to this : use (if available) a site with templates. You
generate the first time all your pages and thereafter only server side
pages. Doinf this you can use your preferred html editor for html files and
you can use codecharge to modify your server side page, assuming you have
not to hand code theses pages. Unfortunately I must admit that there is many
chances that you have to.

So the guys of YesSoftware :-), if you read me, be careful, do not reproduce
the same errors as others products ...

I don't believe that this was the reason of abandoning Drumbeat and many
Drumbeat users would agree.
Current Macromedia tools also don't allow to edit the code.

From one point of view, the necessity of manual code editing is a
misconception and should not be implemented at all.
Asking for manual code editing is similar to asking Microsoft to allow
manual editing of Executables (.exe/.dll) created by compiling Visual Basic.
Or if you convert an MS Word to PDF and then make changes in PDF, how would
you convert MS Word to PDF again.

Therefore the goal is to make the tool flexible enough so that manual
changes to the code are not necessary. CodeCharge already implements Events,
so that you can add your own encryption, email or other code inside an Event
and you shouldn't need to modify code after its generation. The weakness
comes from the fact that this functionality is still somewhat limited.
Therefore, CC version 2.0 will be more powerful, customizable and... it will
allow manual code editing... for those who have a different point of view
:-)

We build many pages in our web with CodeCharge 1.x. None is edited after creating the CodeCharge Project.

The trick is to create more style-tags und a html-framework and to include this in the CodeCharge project (in a header- /footer page, in header/footer in pages- and form properties). With <span class = "x"> we give headers another color or font-size. In the events we send emails and makes much more.

Maybe 2.0 comes in September, maybe it comes end of the year. It is not necessary to wait for Version 2.x. With 1.x you can build great webs now.

Look at http://www.pc-team.de/codeCharge and http://www.pc-team.de/pckon/pcAngebote.asp. The CodeCharge generated pages are signed at bottom with 'Diese Seite wurde mit CodeCharge erzeugt'.

Hello Frank,

1. I love CodeCharge, absolutely love it! I've used a LOT of tools
and software in the past and have to say without question CodeCharge
is the BEST!!!! Mind you I was CTO for a startup in MA attempting to
build basically an identical product two years ago and they wouldn't
listen to me when I told them to build something like CodeCharge. If
you buy the basic version, you'll be overjoyed it allows you to
quickly and simply generate VERY powerful applications with very
little trouble at all. Best of all the system is so complete that
once you are done you press one button and it installs the
application on your server for you, no fuss, muss or trouble.

2. Yes, actually you CAN edit the code made by CodeCharge, though
because of it's superior architecture you probably won't need to once
you get used to it. Further once you really get to know the product
you'll find that you really CAN do code inside the product, making
life easier all the way around. Because of the way the system works,
if you edit code OUTSIDE the product you will lose any changes and
custom code the next time you hit generate. If however you get to
know the product and build your code INTO the project you'll be good
to go. One other disadvantage to custom code, if you add custom code
to a project and are happy with it, then move to a different
architecture (say from ASP to PHP) YOU will need to re-write ALL the
custom code yourself, the product won't re-write your custom code in
the new language platform like it does for it's own stuff...

3. It VERY easily allows you to populate a Listbox with the data
from another table and then writes that value to a field in another
table. An excellent example would be the Taskman sample that comes
with CodeCharge. Look at the Task Record (TaskRecord.php or in your
case TaskRecord.asp) edit form, it has several listboxes that are
populated with data from other tables, when you save the record this
information is written to the Task Record. Better still, the sample
is somewhat normalized, and it stores the pointer to the data, NOT
the data itself, best yet ALL this is EASILY accomplished from within
the GUI, NO CUSTOM code needed. So in the sample it is assigning a
record data about projects it is related to, the status of same, and
the individual the record is assigned to. Just as easy would be your
example of looking up a customer in the database to assign it to an
order. If you are used to building Master Detail forms in VB and the
way that works, you can do EXACTLY the same thing in CodeCharge,
ironically many of the forms look JUST like you are used to seeing in
VB. I've been a Senior VB guru since BEFORE it came out (I was an
early MS beta site) and I've built such complex applications and
entire systems in VB that I'm very spoiled and critical of new
systems. CodeCharge is MUCH, much more powerful than VB for what it
does, this is not to say VB is totally replaced by CodeCharge (though
for me this is largely true) but it is moving up there.

4 and 5 are better answer, or have been better answered by Adam.
Though I will say that considering the POWER and capability of
CodeCharge even paying for the "Pro" version is WELL worth it and
then some! The price is nice and low, download the sample, try the
Taskman application and then be smart, buy the Pro version which
gives you two years of upgrades... CodeChagre is fantastically
powerful at a low price that can't possibly last. Visual Studio
Enterprise is several thousand dollars, and it doesn't even come
close to CodeCharge, it is only a matter of time before the price
goes up, how much no-one knows. I've had it now for a couple of
weeks and the development time it has saved me has MORE than paid for
the price of the PRO version... Use the demo, get to know the demo
thru the excellent samples that come with it and you'll be hooked!!!!

6. Flash and such are just pieces of code that you can insert into
you projects just like you would with FrontPage, GoLive or many
others. So though I have not tried it, I can not see why it would be
a major problems...

7. I think I answered this question in three, but to be sure:
CodeCharge makes Visual Interdev look like a NIGHTMARE piece of
spaghetti code. The same system in Interdev is a nightmare ot build,
RUNS ONLY ON NT, and uses unstable technology that can't easily move
to another architecture... Free yourself for more important tasks
