How does the syntax for Search Form work.
I have a basic Search/Grid form with Company field for search.
What is the correct way to use search syntax like:
to find all starting with "a or wildcard *a
I am on PHP4/MySQL

You only need to specify the search rules in the Input section of your Grid
Form properties.
For example if the field/variable "product" contains the search value, you
can add such field in the Input section, then select Operation "=" to find
the exact match, or "Like %...%" to find this keyword within the search
field.
Please take a look at the Input section of any of the Seach Result forms in
the existing CodeCharge examples.

How do you distinguish between AND and OR ...
The search page wizard has a checkbox for that, but I cant figure out
what it does to specify this. All my searches turn out to be "AND" if
I have multiple fields on a search form

The search is "OR" by default unless you select the "Required" checkbox, in
which case it will be "AND".
