I just looked at the Protal project and noticed the updated new service.
Can someone explain how this is being done and how to use other new
services. I think this is being done using Active Channels, but I don't
know how to program for them.

Any suggestions or examples would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The updated news service is actually REALLY simple, it is a service provided
by Oreilly called meerkat (http://meerkat.oreillynet.com). You go in,
select the news items you want to see, and then they feed you some HTML
code. THe Portal example then drops this code into the news MySQL table and
everytime the Portal page comes up it loads that code into the table on the
page which then grabs the news and puts it into the space. You can also use
moreover.com to get regular (non-computer related) news feed right into your
page... Take a look at http://www.icebreakersdc.com for an example of the
moreover stuff... You'll notice that this is built around the Portal
example, an actual production site designed to be a mini-dating service...
I still have a bit more work to do on it, but I've added things like having
the system e-mail you your password if you've forgotten it and a bunch of
other things under the covers...

Scott...

P.S. Here's the code used in the Portal example:

<style> .meerkatTitle {background-color: .meerkatDescription
{background-color: .meerkatCategory {background-color: .meerkatChannel
{background-color: .meerkatDate {background-color: </style> <script
language="JavaScript" src="http://meerkat.oreillynet.com/?m=296&_fl=js">
</script>

Scott explained it very well.
I just want to summarize in couple sentences:
There are various services that provide news feeds and other content by
giving you a piece of JavaScript code that you may include on your web site.
Meerkat.com, Moreover.com and iSyndicate.com are some of the examples you
may look at.
