Any tips on how to accomplish the following in PHP?

I have made a record page with insert and cancel buttons.

After insert I would like to return to the same page with the new record in
update / edit mode.

I tried an 'After Insert' event with:
$fldmid = mysql_insert_id (); (this returns the correct ID)

Now how do I get this value appended to the URL from an insert function?
ExistingURL + (?mid=$fldmid)
