 Templates or no?

I note that the CC docs say that use of templates in CC are mostly a
matter of personal preference, but in my use of PHP with CC I think that's not
really the case. I think that there are fundamental differences in design
approach dictated by the use of templates, many that may not be obvious at the
outset. I'm currently using ver2-beta5 with PHP&templates.

It seems to me that the handling of actual HTML output thru templates
changes the anticipated flow from many events and therefore changes the design
approach one needs to take. It may be a bug but I also note that HTML output
from a page open event seems to get put before the regular page headers etc by
CC. It's really a matter of timing, what seems like should work doesn't
always if you're trying to use custom output in addition to template output.
it's almost like one shouldn't try to do custom output unless it's completely
thru the templates???

On my development machine, it seems like templates are noticeably
slower (using pre-2 CC) and I was initially hesitant to use them, but wanting
to use the latest beta forced me into it. I'd really like to see some more
advanced ways of "sneaking" output into the template flow, like the
{stuff-goes-here} TPL as well as some good definition of the overall output
flow. Also, there are many finer HTML points that could be user controlled for
templates (as has been pointed out here before).

All in all, I really love CC (still learning as fast as i can) and
look forward to the release of a relatively bug-free final 2.0. I hope that
we can then get some up-to-date technical documentation on the finer points of
forms/fields/events, perhaps a flow-chart and some syntactical definitions
etc.

Thanks for a great product. I look forward to being even happier as
the product matures (and I understand templates better).

One final comment: looking at the Poll at gotocode.com, it seems like
that there are as many, if not more, PHP users compared to ASP users. I'd
like to perhaps see a better PHP representation in examples, tips, etc.

Cheers,

- Don
