Hi,

hope I've piqued your interest by the subject !

I'm looking to develop a site in CC using MySQL & PHP.
Basically, I'm going to be holding details on thousands of items; each item
will belong to a category - e.g. item = peach, category = fruit.

What I'd like to be able to do is to allow a user to look through all the
items in the category, but then be presented with a list of "similar"
categories to the one they're currently looking at, so they can then pcik
one of these categories & go browse the items in it..

E.g. they're in the category "Fruit", but they also see a list presented of
similar categories, "Vegetables", "Meat", "Pastries" and so on - in this
case the link between categories is Food. The user doesn't know how the
categories are associated with one another, they just are.

Part 1 of my project is to identify how to define & implement a way of
associating these categories together in MySQL.
Part 2 will be how to present them on a page.

I hope this makes sense !
I'm now at part 1 - can anyone give me some pointers, or examples of how
this might be accomplished ?

Many Thanks,
Mark

Not sure if its what u want but how about in the table with all the
categories as a primary key you had a field which contained a number, these
numbers related to like sets of categories, for fruit vegetables and
pastries the value in this field would all be equal, then u could bring up
items in a grid or whatever with a simple SQL statement. This wouldnt work
if u were intending to have items in more than one such set, im not too good
wuith databases so im sure theres a more efficient way but thats how id have
a go at it.
