A bit off topic but hope you can help.
I have a client who wants a web app which will attract a lot of traffic.
The product I normally use just won't handle the volume.
Here is the hardware
4 - 2.0 Gigahertz servers running Win2k Advanced 500 megs mem each
1 - 2.0 Gigahertz server running NT SP6 and MSSQL with 756 meg memory
all network card are 100's and good quality 3coms. All 4 servers
above feed this box
1 - Router which rotates the traffic the the 4 servers in a round robin
fashion
4 - ADSL line for incoming traffic 1 per server
The app
The application has about 25 web pages of which 3-4 are hit heavily.
The database consists of over 15 million records.
The average visitor will look up about 10 of these records - highly
random
The 10 records will be placed in an email message and sent to him.
The email sending portion is done by another server (not listed) and
another DSL line.
Question is
If this is written well with same images on the pages etc., and in PHP,
or ASP etc. then?????
1 Which is the most efficient PHP, or .... ?
2 Any idea of how many hits per day this could handle???
3 Where do think the bottleneck may be located?.
I appreciate any or all answers - I know I am new to this group and ask your
indulgence.
TIA
Roger Clark
