Well, the Beta has been available for a few days and no one has posted their
opinions....strange for this group.
I went to the demo last Thursday at the Software Developers Conf. in San
Jose and was quite impressed. I am not a highly experienced coder but I can
usually adopt to tools given enough time or short enough deadlines. With
that being said, I thought CodeCharge 1.02 or whatever my first version was,
gave me an incredible value. It made me, in a word, productive. Now Studio
comes along and after playing with it for just 2 days, I think this new
product is an even better value than the original Codecharge.
Yesterday, starting at 7:30 pm and finishing up at 6am with a crab Louie
dinner and 3 glasses of wine in between, I fumbled my way into a functional
and attractive intranet site to replace the main service record application
we run on our LAN. I say stumbled because the manual style(?) is a
tradition held over from the old program so it was "learn-by-doing". Ok, it
is just a Beta but it looks too much like the old CC manual to give
confidence that features will be fully documented any time soon. The live
demo was worth 1,000 words (of the manual). The application that my new
Studio based project will replace is more polished for sure, but in VB, it
took 6mo to get working well enough to do its intended job. I have not
touched the templates with an external HTML editor yet because the design
features of Studio are pretty full featured. It was easy to make it pretty
enough, as I went along. After it is running for a while, maybe I'll have
time to spruce it up in DV. The development time was shorted by already
having a working database, of course, but it was still pretty impressive to
me.

The conference was a little weak on thrills...except for the YesSoftware
booth where gifts were in abundance. The inertia triggered LED lit rubber
ball was a big hit with my GFs mini-dog. My gift was the CD version of the
Beta. My GF's gift was going shopping for a few hours while I was nerding
at the conference. I passed on retractable phone cords and the spinners(?)
Actually, it was a pleasure to meet some of the crew from YesSoftware. I
found out that the company has about 40 employees and some of the
development work is done in Ukraine.

I know a lot of people have commented about the integration with FrontPage
and not DV/UD4 but the alliance announced during the show making a strong
connection with MS and their FrontPage users groups and newsletters is be a
smart business move. Within a week of release announcements in FPs groups,
more sales should result than what we first adopters have been able to
create in 2 years of word of mouth. You can still use Studio with DV, as I
did last night but the integration with FrontPage is tight and offers a
pretty nice alternative to Macromedia's way of doing things. I have UD4 and
never could have gotten as far with it as I have with Codecharge and now
Studio, given my advanced beginner status.

What do people see as major hit?
What are the big misses?
What would we like to see included but was left out?
Will there be a way to register additional objects or add-in?
Will some type of SDK be available to modify or create our own script
templates?
What do you think about the separation of code from HTML in templates as the
only option? I always worked that way anyway so it was of no concern to me.
It does offer a lot more functionality in the program at a little expense of
speed.
Anybody encounter any bugs yet? I had one crash but the way the files are
saved and published often while working, I did not loose anything.
