PeterR,

Microsoft SQL Server version code named "YUKON" will have XML datatypes as a major part of it's deliverable.

Is CCS aware if it will cover the new data type? see article

http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/04/02/XMLinYukon/default.aspx

Oracle V9.0 supports the DataType - XMLType.

If CCS supports the XMLTYPE what are the implications for us mortals embudding this into CCS templates?

Edd,
CCS will not immediately cover the new data type (except via standard SQL) unless for some reason this becomes more important then the other features we're focusing on. We have a list of 200+ features to implement, including many from http://forums.codecharge.com/forum.php?forum_id=22
Almost every day someone is asking about supporting some new component, technology feature or database featue out there, even those that haven't been released yet.
Our priorities are based on their popularity and practical usability, therefore they can change if a feature becomes highly requested, with information about how and why the requested feature would be used in practice (within ths scope of CCS).
If you and other users express practical needs for this datatype and it is more important to them than internationalization, visual query builder, calendar component, etc. then we may be able to get to it sooner.

I understand that you also expect YesSoftware to be one step ahead and even provide some direction for CCS users. We always research various new technolgies (like PHP5), however at this time we do not recognize the XML data type as being as important, possibly until Yukon is actually released. Also keep in mind that we try to design all CCS features to be compatible with all common databases, not excluding MySql or even MS Access (though we support Stored Procedures even when not all databases can use them).

However, XML itself is something that we're interested in as a data source and we hope to utilize it in such way in the future. Currently XML is often considered as an alternative data source to a database, however with the new XML data type it may turn out that we'll be actively using XML stored in XML datatype fields.

We can also find good use for XML in Website translations/internationalization as we're currently testing several approaches. And again, XML data type may turn out useful here though maybe not for PHP+MySQL users.

I guess a lot of things will come together as we make progress on implementing various features.

Lastly, you made a comment about XMLTYPE (or XML in general) to be used in CCS templates. If you have in mind the data for HTML templates then see above (XML as data source), but if you meant replacing HTML templates with XML (or rather XSL) then there are no such plans.
