Hi,

How can I connect to MySQL database when my host does not allow odbc connection.

Could I use a remote connection?
If yes, how would I go about using it with your application
Thanks

Set up the ODBC locally on your computer not on the host. Then you connect remotely to the host thought the local ODBC. You will need to download it here http://www.mysql.com/downloads/api-myodbc.html and install it on your computer.

Let me repeat, my webhost does not allow outside connection to the mysql database, thus ODBC will not work. I need to create a remote connection from my computer to the mysql database.

Please see example at http://www.hkvstore.com/phpmaker/datasetup.asp and view Connection to Remote MySQL.

Thanks

If your isp does not alow remote acces to the database (most of them do not allow this for security reasons) you can not connect remotely. There is no trick to do this. You'll have to setup a database localy and make sure the remote databse is updated to reflect the changes yoou make localy. With mysql for example I'd recommend using phpmyadmin localy and on the remote. This will allow you to export to a .sql file localy and use this file to update the remote.

I would switch hosting companies if I were you. Or at least tell your hosting compnay that you are going to switch if they don't allow you to connect remotely to your mysql database.

I use http://www.Pair.com

Well I have a different opinion. I do not want to be hosted by a hosting company that allows remote connecting because it is a possible security risk. I like developing localy and then updating the remote database. I can work fast (no remote connection can be faster then running the database on your own network), my website is not hampered when I mess up things during development.(wich I frequently do:-)

Another plus sign is the cost. My webhosting (php/mysql(several databases)/800mb storage/400 emails etc etc) costs $7,99 per month. The package that starts offering mysql(1 database!!)/php at http://www.Pair.com starts at $17,95.

I also host with Pair. Have you found a solution to this?

Some time I found that you could use a telnet connection to connect remotely to your server. That information come to me from one hoster forum regarding a question similar to yours, I canīt remember more details, do try google to test how lucky you are .

I'm having a similar problem as well. I want to connect via MS Access by linking to my MySQL database hosted at www.fluxservices.com. My only problem is, I don't know what to put in the Host/Server (or IP Address) field when editing my ODBC connection. I posted this similar on fluxservices forum:

I appreciate any help out there!
