I am trying to figure out how to determine the the direction of split cell. Also is there an key combination to select multiple cells to merge.

Only the neighboring cells within the same row can be merged, or split. There is no feature in CCS to split or merge cells within columns but you could use an HTML editor (Dreamweaver or Fonrtpage) to do this.
To select cells within the same row you'd need to highlight multiple cells by dragging the mouse over them and you should see them highlighted.
