Database expressions work with SQL grid data source types?

It seems to me that the exact same database expression:

CONCAT(" [",Days_Remaining,"]")

... (php4,mySQL4) works okay when placed on editable grids with a table source, but not when the source is a SQL statement (with grouping, by the way). Has anyone else had issues with this? I can't seem to find any posts dealing with this.
