I just wanted to announce the Launch of a CCS developed site, as an example of what can be accomplished with this amazing tool.

http://www.peerflix.com

So far the New York Times and The Seattle Post-Intelligencer have done stories on us. The site is growing very fast!

Thanks CodeCharge!, and Thank you the Code Charge Community for all your help (mostly unknowingly -- I seem to be able to find most answers to issues in these boards)

Anyone who is actually interested in a netflix - style service that only costs $5 per month, give it a shot there is a free 30 day trial!

If anyone has any suggested improvements or constructive criticism I am all ears!

Thanks,

Tim Stewart
CTO Peerflix, Inc.

Tim,

Fantastic site !! Codechargers if you want to get ideas on how to put a site like this together take a look at the respective *.html pages. As the site was developed with CCS you will be able to see the underlying template files.

eg: instead of http://www.peerflix.com/browse.asp? try http://www.peerflix.com/browse.html

Tim,

I noticed that some of your pages are asp and some are aspx, eg: register.aspx were the aspx pages also developed in CCS of VS.NET ? If developed in CCS how was the ASPX development experience in CCS compared to ASP ?

Actually the Registration process was done in Pure asp.net without the assistance of CodeCharge. For the registration process, we wanted to use the inherent client side validators that asp.net has which make little error messages appear without having to create that in javascript ourselves.

We are also in the process of migrating the CCS portion of the site (the rest of it) to asp.net by using CodeCharge Studio to generate the project, and then porting all of our custom code to .net -- I will report back about my experiences after (and probably during - if I run into trouble) it is all done.

Thanks for the kid words.

One cool interface feature that I really like is the stars for rating the movies, this is using a really cool trick to store the users ratings without updating the page at all. It's using the '204 No Content Response' header on the target page to store data to the DB without a screen refresh, sort of a poor mans remote scripting.

Tim,

Oh, you didn't use CCS for everything? Then I decided to test your ASPX part :-)
OK, so for example on the Registration page at https://www.peerflix.com/reg/register.aspx it's not possible to use an apostrophe in the email address, for example Shaun.O'Reilly@website.com.
(apostrophes in emails should be valid if they are to the left of "@")
There is another, possibly more serious issue because it generates many Website errors, which I will email to you directly.

As a side note, I just found that Peerflix looks strikingly similar to one of the first Websites developed by YesSoftware: www.YesSwap.com (which also has "Items I Have" & "Items I Want")

Thanks Peter for the free Beta testing!

If only I would have seen yesswap years ago, I would have had this idea sooner!

The problem with yesswap and other systems like it, is that there is no fluidity in the marketplace because you can't act as bank. In Peerflix (and soon peergamez) sending out 1 item gets you 'currency' you can use to get anything else.

With yesswap it appears that you must make a 1 - 1 match whereby I want an item you have, and you want an item I have.
I was unable succesfully create an account because of an issue during signup (I emailed you about this separately -- touchè)
so I couldn't verify this.

One other issue is that people have to enter in a bunch of information into your site, whereas in our site we already know about everything so just a UPC code or name of product is all you need to enter to add.

Also you can just browse or search for anything you might be interested in.

You're probably right.
I wasn't involved with YesSwap and cannot comment, however you seem right that the model seems different. YesSwap looks more similar to an auction-like item swapping between people, while Peerflix has a nice feel of a service like DVD rental that has someone responsible behind it. I really like it!

Tim,

Care to explain for about how this works?
