In trying to create the Hello World tutorial on XP, .net 1.1, IIS 5, I get an Internal Server Error (none of the current posts with that topic seem to apply).
Event Log says "The server failed to load application ''. The error was 'The specified metadata was not found.
'.
At some point, I was able to get the page to display by browsing my site in IIS, but don't know how I did it.
Perhaps related is that I can never access http://localhost...I must use the IP address (I have specified the IP address in the path setting).
Any help appreciated.

I solved this one by publishing to a virtual directory.
Thanks to all who considered it.

Generally this means that the site you published to is not configured as an
"application" in the IIS manager applet. Presumably the virtual directory
was added under a branch that was properly configure. This could also be
related to whether the IWAM account was disabled/misconfigured and the
"medium (Pooled)" Application Protection option was selected,
