This component works fine if the child directory is about 50 or less but it will not show when it reaches a certain threshold ( I could not determine the threshold as it will take to much trial and error) What should I do to expand this threshold limit?

I am using PHP, CCS 2.3 MySQL Apache

Tq in advance

Hi,

the directory component is very basic, its ok for a beginner but if you need nodes, many subcategorys and so on, this component is in my opinion not an option and its behavior is not easy enough to customize.

actually i develop my own directory by SQL and php the base is a gridform the category structure will made of nodes/serials so you can move categorys from one to another (auto carry with subcategorys of the moved one)and much other things with ease

sure it can be done with CCS thats why we are here *g
you could build it with actions/events by just clicking around and add parameters, but this will blow up code much,
so its better to use some custom functions in addition

the basesolution in easy speak is:

display a link , and alter its behavior based on the following questions

1.is the link a node?
2. has this link subnodes?
3.is the link the last node?
this you ask for every row in the recordset

that are the base questions , a tabel structure could be the following

fields:
1.Name of node/category text
2.serial of node/category TEXT(!!!)
3.order (to sort nodes positions)

a "serial" of a category/node could look like this 001001002
a subnode of such a category would look like this 001001002001

if you look this by math you see you can whatever deep your
categorys are ,you can with one call find out everything, deep, count of parentnodes, hirarchical position

sers

Hi guys,

I'm little concerned that this thread got little off-topic. An ability to display more than 50 subcategories is not related to simplicity. Whether the directory is basic or not, the directory should work similarly to http://dir.yahoo.com/ . I recommend reporting such issues to CCS support, so we may check into these limits and possible reasons for them, and resolve any bugs if needed.

Of course there may be other solutions to handle hierarchical structures. I just wanted to point that if your car doesn't start then it's probably better to take it to a mechanic for an inspection just to see what's wrong before buying a new one :-)

Regards,

hi peterr,

i have to agree with you the directory component does its work as expected to, until it comes to much nodes/subdirs, somewhere there must be a mathematical problem in the component.

but thats not the problem, the main problem i see is:
WHO wants to have a dir on his site similar to yahoo?
im sure most of CCS users try to modify the directory component to show other behavior than the "yahoo style"
i think many of the users try to modify it as a menu for displayed in the left side of their site. and here comes the thing...

to modify the directory component to behave letz say like the filetree in
windows file explorer you have to trick and fix around the component so much, you can write your own in the same time(if you know how)

look this menue http://www.codecharge.com/products/
im sure many users try to do like this with the directory component
there is much javascript sure, but i think you know on what point i want to go :-)

im sure one day YES Software bring us a menue(navbar) component
but until this you will have much questions about the directory component to answer for sure

CCS is GREAT software and i see killerpotential for the future in a long term, i want to see when you can use the diagrams for building programlogic :-) (time will show).

regards

Karsten from germany

Karsten,

I think that the main problem is that some people take the directory and try to make it into something else, like a menu. But it is not a menu, wasn't designed as a menu, and will not work as a menu.
This is not a problem with the directory, but you may simply need something else, maybe a different component. We also cannot use the Grid as a Calendar, but nobody says that "Grid component does its work as expected to, until it comes to Calendars".
The directory was created to work like Yahoo directory and if you need something else then it is not related to the Directory at all.

As for:
Quote :
WHO wants to have a dir on his site similar to yahoo?
Everybody who creates a shareware portal, software directory, online store with categorized items, etc.
Here are a few examples: http://www.zdnet.de/downloads/ , http://www.tucows.com/windows.html , http://www.aspin.com/ .
And there are thousands of such Websites.

Therefore again, I am trying to clarify that the Directory works and should work like Yahoo directory. This is how it was designed and this is what it does.
If you like to create or discuss another, different component then you may submit a new Wish, or create a different discussion that clearly states that you are not talking about the Directory component.
I hope that this will solve any confusion.

And, BTW, such misunderstandings are indeed a real issues for us. We received multiple support requests from users also trying to adapt the directory component for some custom needs like menus. Thus I am not surprised that you also tried this :-)

Regards,

The Peter is right, I tried to use it for menu but it doesn't wok as I wanted.
So I decided to make my own function that generates menus-submenus
from mySQL table ... and uses sessions to remember states ...
The menu can bee seen at www.vision.to , many people thinks I have used dir component but not, this is a custom developed function ...

:-<
The answer given was "....increase max_execution_time option in php.ini " I tried from 30s to 60 s but it seem to slow down all server activities and still do not display.

Probably not the most efficient alternative.
