Editable grid - shows no rows after custom addError

hi
I added a custom error message in the onvalidate() event of an editable grid

if(....)
$editablegrid->Errors->addError("custom error");

my problem:
when the custom error comes up, all the rows that where in the process of being entered and contain the error dissappear??
in fact the error message comes up with 0 rows in the grid.

can anyone help out ?
