Extra spaces entered in search field results in 0 records found??

How can I delete the extra spaces that a user may enter into a search field? The URL will show the field name, the search criteria and then a "+" to note the space added. I have tried remove parameter but that does not work. Can anyone help?

I have found this PHP command:

trim()

I think this may be what I'm looking for, can someone tell me how I sould impliment it?
