Has anyone experienced problems within a high-volume website using MySQL where the rows are uniquely
identified by auto_increment primary key fields?

Have you started seeing significant delays when performing
record inserts into MySQL as the number of users inserting
records into the database increases?

If you experience problems you should probably look at what table types you are using. Try different ones to suit your needs. Like innodb tables instead of myisam and vice versa.

INNODB is the only choice for us in this application.

MYISAM is fine for retrievals, but updates to a table using this
engine require the entire table to be locked prior to performing
updates.

I think we'll just have to see what happens overtime. ;-)

You may want to use tools to analyze if you have database bottle necks. Check the MySQL site for their or 3rd party tools that can help you determine where bottle necks are. It could be slow queries that need to be rewritten or other database issues that could be quickly addressed. Good Luck.
