Let me preface my question by saying that my expertise level is pretty low, so chances are I'm missing something obvious.
I have created a link and I want to associate a parameter with calling that page whose value is from a column in the database. I can see this value in the current page, but I can't pass it to the linked page. Here's what I tried:
I set the "Href Type" property to Page and then click on the "Href Source", bring up the "Href Source" dialog, then bring up the "Link Parameter" dialog box. I set the parameter name to what the next page is expecting. I have tried 'Expression' 'Form' and 'Control', but no matter what, I either get an ampty value (i.e., the link is http://www.whatever.edu/page.php?my_param=
or a syntax error.
Any help would be appreciated.

One thing I should add, the link is oustide a record, so there is no "DataSource Column" in the Source Type droplist.

Yes, this looks like the problem. A link can only retrieve data from the current form's datasource, thus link by itself doesn't have any source of data to use as parameter's value.
In such case I would probably use a Label and use custom code in Before Show event that would convert it to a link with all necessary parameters.
