I would like to make the bookstore example calculate sales tax and shipping. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Ryan,
I think to achieve the results you need you should modify db as well to add "tax" and "shipping" fields to it. The other way is to calculate them dynamically depending on any condition. You can store sub total sum in "orders" table if you want or just display it on the form.
Anyway I suppose all calculations should be made when the new record is inserted to "orders" table or when it is updating.
