Hi Peter,
Is there a way to include other file types such as XSL in the project so that it gets published to the web site when I publish the project?

Yes, you can specify all file extensions that you like to publish. In CCS go to Project Settings -> Publishing -> All files with extensions.
Note that this option slows the publishing somewhat (unless using Quick Publish features), as CCS is then searching for all files with the specfied extensions rather than publishing known pages. Thus I recommend using this option when you have some new files to publish, then switch back to "Project Files".
