I can't seem to figure this thing out either. I'm following the directions, but when I press OK is says
"Test connection failed because of provider initialization error.
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified."
And, yes, I do have a database set up properly and I am using the correct name in the database name field.
Any ideas?

Did you create a User or System DSN in Windows?

I'm using Root as my username.
My database is local and I thought that local databases didn't require a System DSN.
Assuming I'm incorrect on one or more of these assumptions, how do I go about changing this?
Thank you in advance.

Also, why do all of these special things have to be set up for a simple database connection? I've already got three PHP-based websites on localhost that interface flawlessly with mySQL (I didn't do any of the coding). All that was needed for a connection were the database name, username and password.

That was trick question to see if you really followed directions as you wrote
Yes, you need to create ODBC/DSN if you want any Windows program to connect to your database, whether CodeCharge, Excel or any other.
Of course Web applications don't need ODBC, therefore in the server connection you don't need to specify ODBC for PHP.
Your only problem is with the design connection, not the server.

It's still not working. I've got a System DSN set up with the ODBC Data Source Adminstrator and it tests fine. However, when I try to set the connection in CC, I get:
Test connection failed because of provider initialization error.
[MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver]Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)

Actually, I meant to say that I set up the System DSN with MyODBC and it tests successfully.

There could be several reasons for such error.
Do you have that MySQL running on local computer?
Also try it without putting usernamed/password in CCS.
Other solutions may be available at http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22Can%27t+connect...localhost%27%22

Oh, now this is embarrassing. Turns out it wasn't working because of a bad setting on my firewall.
Thanks so much for your help!
