Usually you would access your database by ODBC while developing and by php on the target (Linux) PC.
PHP have to be compiled with support for your database.
(Is it MySQL?)

CCS Help also contains several samples of connection settings to databases.

CCS allows you to specify both th Design (CCS) connection settings and the Server (PHP) connection settings. You may need to change the server settings of your connection if you will be running your Website on 2 different servers - for example local for testing and another as production environment.
You can press F1 when you're on the Connection configuration screen to view the exact instructions on how to configure it.
