How to automatic fill a specific field in an editable grid?

I like to do the following:
- select a value (e.g. month) at the top of the page
- select a customer in an editable grid and add some extra data
- that when a customer is selected, the date value is copied into the row of that customer (rather than select it by hand again).

How to implement the third step?
