I evaluated this product 2 years ago, and I have found my way back to it, evaluating it again for a new wave of work.

Sorry for the probably dumb question, but ...
Isn't there a way to:

- Build a grid page using the grid builder [simultaneously defining an associated query]
- Change the query
- Automatically rebuild the page again to include things I added to the query

I don't see a way to save the queries and existing page settings and be able to extend them automatically. It looks like once a build a page, I'm forced to make additions manually.

Am I missing something?

I wouldn't call it "being forced" because this is quick and easy process, and a million people have been using this method in MS Access and other visual development tools, even without using builders at all. CCS goes an extra step by proving builders, but this doesn't mean that they should or could replace the development process. We also have to assume that you may manually change your grid layout, add some graphics, etc. - therefore re-generating a grid could damage your previous grid variant.

Nope. Unless you assumed that you have to manually change the generated code. This is not the case - you can simply reopen the query used in a grid and modify it, then add/remove columns from your grid.

I guess I don't understand why you have to assume that I'll want to change something about the grid layout. The builder is terrific and powerful, and it collects all kinds of settings from the user the first time around. I don't see why you wouldn't better exploit that power and simplicity by allowing the user the option to change the query and then rebuild, without having to respecify everything.

This was just one of assumptions, and it is not specific to your own needs but also takes into consideration other people. We have sufficient experience supporting this product to understand what to expect.
There are also other reasons that this wasn't implemented, like time and other priorities, and I am not saying that your suggestion is invalid or doesn't make sense. This has been suggested before, and you can also submit related suggestion/wish. I'm just explaining that the current approach is not that bad, and it is what it is. Once you start using the product you may even forget all about it. I even doubt that you will be changing your grids too often, while modifying or rebuilding a grid from scratch may take 2-5 minutes. If you find serious needs for modifying your grid(s) on daily basis then this might be a problem by itself and I would look for its source.

Frank,
To your second post, and from a (non Yes) point of view:

Using the Builder to generate a Grid, and then reusing the Builder to apply
later-moments changes, would be as fast as rebuilding (replacing) the first
build.

Since version (I think 3+) we have the checkbox save used/specified options
in the Builder, so the second Builder wizzard will apply some critical
settings from the first round.

Also, not stating that your proposal in a nont valid one, it is but the
current way is as Peterr describes.

Guys - thanks for the excellent dialog.

My original intention wasn't to be negative, but to just share my observations as I evaluate the product.

But, let it be known that I think this thing is - Amazing. :-)
