I don't know if this topic belongs in the ASP section, but I use ASP for my intranet site. On the main page it's an html file, since there are just links to different sections. But if I try to modify this main page, save it, and publish, none of the changes show up live.

Are you sure that the changes don't show up, or the page doesn't get published? Possibly you are publishing the page to a wrong location?
Please try deleting your live page (or move it somewhere else) so that your live page will show "page not found". Then re-publish the page from CCS and check if it will be published.
This way you can check if the page doesn't get published at all, or the page gets published but without without changes.

Apparently it doesn't publish .html files. If i try to look at "default.html", it doesn't show updates. But if I look at "default.asp" it shows the updates. And it's just a measely little start page with 4 links to different pages. It's weird.

I changed the publishing settings to publish the dozens of file extensions that could be used and that still didn't work
