The grid builder will build a Search panel vertically or horizontally.
Is there any way to get the builder to do a little of both?
Meaning, place the search controls in an n x n table so that the total vertical
length of the Search panel is reduced?

By change the HTML, you mean do it by hand, yes? You're not referring to a way to get the Builder to to do it, correct?

Correct, would be the short answer.
Long answer is:
In Design mode you can add rows/columns and move around/add any prompts/fields
In HTML mode you can add your own <TR> <TD> combi and move around all you want.
