Hi All,
We're working on various new features for CCS, of which some are about ready and soon will be available in version 3.1.
Although the 3.1 release is not yet release-ready and there is no Beta program, I just wanted to post a preview for the forum users who'd like to take a look or start using it ASAP.
The CCS 3.1 preview can be obtained from: http://www.yessoftware.com/download/files/CCStudio3_1.exe
It will be free upgrade for all CCS 3.0 users.
This version is considered stable except:
- a known issue with the "Change To" feature.
- any issues you may find
The bulk of new features consists of:
- Gallery Builder (Horizontal Grid)
- FCKeditor support (rich text WYSIWYG editing)
- "Use client paging" option in Report Builder. This is an ability to print reports with browser-based page breaks, without calculating page size in number of lines. Page size will be calculated by the Web browser and based on printer type and configuration.
- Ability to exclude hidden fields from database updates, thus leaving field values unchanged instead of updating them with Null values.
For more details see: http://forums.codecharge.com/posts.php?post_id=73124 http://forums.codecharge.com/posts.php?post_id=74559
Now this can be controlled in CCS 3.1 at project level via new option in Project Settings ("[x] Exclude missing form fields/parameters from data updates"). Then it can be further overridden in Custom Insert/Update properties of a form.
- A new feature called "Component Attributes" which enables dynamic/programmatic control of HTML attributes and should be used in place of template variables. This feature was partially needed for the Gallery Builder and resolves the problem of not being able to place Labels within controls. Now these dynamic attributes can be used instead.
More details about the above features can be found in the 3.1 Help file (search for: gallery, FCKeditor, client paging, exclude missing form fields, component attributes)
Comments are welcome. Have fun!

I forgot that the alternate grid rows are also implemented via CSS now, as an option in Grid Builder. Thanks to component attributes as you pointed Walter

I was starting to get a feeling that something was brewing at Yes Software and Peterr you confirmed my feeling. This is GREAT NEWS. I am looking forward to testing out the new features.

If we find any issues with the 3.1 version should we just report them to support or post them here or will there be a forum created??

I think that it would be better to post them directly to support. Thanks!

I don't know yet how or if we'll be posting new preview versions but every new installation should have different numbering.

You don't need to re-download anything. There is only one preview version unless I post a new one here.

Can I use 3.0 and 3.1 side by side?
If I don't hit a pothole, I'll deploy my first CCS app to production within 2 weeks. At that point, I Have to have a stable version to rebuild that app. But, the next app will make great use of both the Gallery Builder and the FCKeditor. Can I use 3.1 for the next app and 3.0 for the current app on one machine?

CCS 3.1 is (going to be) the next release to 3.0, so side-by-side on one
machine will not work, I imagine.
CC2 and CCS3 will co-exist.

Your keywords are "have to have" and an eager undertone as to releasing
in time and working, therefore pro-behaviour would not tolerate any such
risk.
Please be aware Peterr advertised 3.1 as a PreView!!!
You might get lucky if and when 3.1 final is release just after your 2
weeks.
Personally I would not gamble with an application that has A schedule.

Frank,
In my opinion you can use the current version 3.1 for production apps because this is not a very major release and the "Preview" is actually similar to a RC in this case.
However, if you can hold-off for couple weeks then possibly the Preview version will be updated or final CCS 3.1 released.

I have been using CCS 3.1 and I am happy to report no major issues at this point (other then the ones mentioned above).
I love the new features.

As the advice is to report to support any discrepancies, this thread is
not showing any.
Am using 3.1 problem free.
One problem was resolved by Support fast without any downloading just a
registry key change, Grid and Record Builder not completing it's last step.
IMHO 3.1 is great and stable.

I looked up the fix given to Walter:
Close CCS and delete the registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\YesSoftware\CodeChargeStudio3\Options\Builders\Grid and Record Components Builder\Step 2\recordStep
Although I'm not sure if this problem would affect everyone.

Correct, that was the solution to MY problem.
The only other (cosmetic) issue I reported is the "Uninstall CCS 3.1......"
on the installer where it finds a CCS 3.0.4.12.

One problem with all upgrades - we are forced to regenerate all the pages in a project. Sometimes you tend to forget any minor changes made manually in code which cannot be handled in the event file.
And then a new task for verification of each page stabilty and testing is added to the list of developer.
Can this be handled somehow with allowing execution of pages produced by earlier versions for backward compatiblity.
Also suggest that the pages should have in code the version no of CCS used to generate the code as a remark for detection of level of backward compatibilty requried by the page.

Isn't this only true for major releases? I would expect 3.1 to be transparent? Am I naive?

It is transparent and you simply need to press F9 to regenerate the project as Navneet pointed.

There is no need to edit / do manually change to the code already generated!!
