sessions variables locale and lang

Hi:

Which is the difference between session variable locale and session variable lang???

I have my site in spanish and english and I have done all text translations (I have es.txt and en.txt):

Why doesnt take effect putting in the URL ........?lang=en??

But if I put: .......?locale=en , works perfectly and texts appears in english.

why session variable locale change automaticly session variable lang??

Can these variables different??
