scripting within columns of a table( HTML 4)

Hello to you all. I'm actually new to HTML coding and sripting, so please bear with me, lol.

I want to find out how to display a message in one column of a table (having two columns) when the mouse is over some text in the other column. In this i would like to use pure HTML and Javascript bt not CSS.
Anyway help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
