I've been using Codecharge since the very early versions (5-6 years ish) and developed loads of great stuff.

It's always been ASP and ACCESS.

Now I want to move up a gear. So I try to build in .NET, I download the latest framework and tell CSS to build forum project in the solutions section. But the page wont run it has compilation errors. I haven't touched anything. Why has it got errors?

The next thing is MSsql. For almost 2 years I've been wrestling with it trying to get to run on my machine. In despair I download MySQL and a copy of NAICAT and its working in less than 10 mins!

So the question is "is .NET worth the hassel" would I be better going for PHP and MySQL bearing in mind how easy I found MySQL to setup.

Many thanks

Tony

I think when you reach this point it is essential that you reevaluate all the options. Including the use of CCS and database offerings.

The biggest impact is your clients: Essentially it is a matter of cost to their infrastucture, my clients are all Microsoft shops - if I wanted to introduce PHP I would lose them.

A business associate only deals with Open Souce zealots so PHP has suited him perfectly.

Anyway you look at it you are going to win and lose something. My advice is talk to your clients and prospective clients - is the move away from Microsoft going to affect your business, if not, go for it as you are bound to save money.

Good Luck

Thanks Edd,

In this instance I'm the client so the real question is "is the pain that .NET will (illustrated by my first experience) cause me, be worth it.

I'll carry on usining ASP and access for some of my clients, but to be quite honest they don't care what I use.

I know I've got to upgrade the database and as I said MySQL seems pretty painless, but should I go all the way and move to PHP. Would that have the publishing issues .NET has?

Tony,
is your choice...
PHP + MySQL or .NET and MSSQL Server ?

Don't try to work .NET and MySQL or PHP and Sql Server. It's gonna work anyway but you will have only problems. The compatibility problems and alot of bugs to resolve. Focus on development not on choosing tools.

First PHP, MySQl is free. Second you can work very well with free versions of SQl Server and Visual Studio.

In order to work with CodeCharge you need some knowlegde in .NET
I mean webconfig and global.asax files and some code knowlegde
My answer is : YES is worth the hassel

don't forget PHP and MySQl
or .NET and SqlServer
;-) ;-)
good luck!
