my thoughts (not necessarily complete or correct! :))
1) ajax is already in the browser without the need for a plug-in (yes I know Flash plugin is almost everywhere)
2) most web developers are already somewhat familiar with javascript (yes I know actionscript is very similar to javascript but not so much in the browser integration areas)
3) ajax does not require a separate IDE and workflow
4) because ajax uses the same familiar web page constructs for displaying content (tables, divs, etc.) it is probably easier to use for most web developers
5) ajax is probably viewed as more non-proprietary and open source
6) and of course, ajax is THE NEXT BIG THING! (don't underestimate the power of hype)

My 2cts:
Apples and Oranges.
The Apollo will be a platform independent complete development environment.
Ajax is a technique enabling RUI on our current platform using currently
available techniques..
On a more joking spree: Web 3.0 is already discussed so.....

you were correct in saying "apples and oranges"
to try and be funny I just substituted "apollos" for "apples" since they sound a little alike in English

To finish this off, as we are drifting off topic,
The ????? where greek chars, spelling portogalis, greek for oranges to
counter the apollo.

And yes, I got it the first time.

Simply put, ajax works well and the groundswell of jquery supporters gives
it a lot of momentum. (jquery.com) Of course there are other ajax
frameworks but I'm hooked on jquery.

The main reason most people are jumping on the AJAX wagon:
asynchronous updates to a web page without having to do a
frickin' page refresh. Also, as mentioned early, AJAX integrates
somewhat easily into the existing framework, with that being
XML and javascript. (Read: browsers and HTTP servers already
support this stuff.)
Anywho, web-based AJAX apps act more like local, OS-based
executables -- something that end-users are familiar with --
so the end result is that users get pretty much the same
look and feel that they are accustom to having. (Albeit with
the app having a bit more of a delay; however, as the years
progress and bit rates increase, this will eventually become
unnoticeable.)
Someone at Microsoft was definitely doing some good thinking
when they thought this out and proposed XMLHttpRequest
objects. OTOH, there are some major complaints from developers,
with most of them saying that the XML side of AJAX can be a major
pain to deal with and can be quite complicated (at times). Anywho, those
are the remarks I'm getting from friends dealing with AJAX and when
viewing others' responses to this subject on the web.
Personally, I'd like a browser that supports PHP 5.X in addition
to javascript, although there is a TON of javascript code out
there, free for the taking. (Shrug.)
Regards,
Randall

Good question parsec,
Personally I think Flex3 has to be considered as the very near future for RIA (rich Internet applications), because now Adobe claims Flex3 it is open source, and cross browser, please see below:
http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Flex_3
Last year I was thinking about other open source RIA platform, but CCS staff thought I was promoting 3rd party products in this forum, but this is not correct. I would only like to have the best development environment using CCS3 as the core tool.
I think these other platforms would allow to develop an application using the great CCS3 and to convert the code of business logic to XML in order to feed the graphical framework. In this case could be Flex3 which uses MXML, and as end result to have a great looking application.
Have you seen this demo store?, I would like to make one like this with the speed of CCS3 and the look this one has, click on Products and see for yourself:
http://examples.adobe.com/flex2/inproduct/sdk/flexstore/flexstore.html
Yes developers can freely download, test and work with Flex3 in order to provide RIA functionality to CCS3, that is all it is, no other intentions:
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flex/sdk/flex3sdk.html
My customers request more and more the type of visual appealing of Flash, I do not have the time nor the resources to invest in mastering Flash, but with a framework like Flex3 we all can use it to control Flash via a markup language: MXML, which I think is easier, don't you think?
Best regards

the Flash plugin has been around a long time now. almost everyone has it. yet we see very few of these Flex/Flash web sites. why is that?
I think it is mainly because you have to invest a lot more time and effort to come up a steeper learning curve and when you get finished your end result still falls short of a well-designed HTML/AJAX site!
in the example you provided, three major issues I noticed immediately,
1) BACK button is broken
2) no printing of the web pages is possible
3) text size is fixed and does not respond to changing my browser settings
If I spent more time with this example I could probably find more issues with it. But, of course, it is only an example. A good Flash/Flex developer could probably fix these issues. (makes you wonder why Adobe wouldn't bother to present a better example!?!)
But the point is, these things (and a lot more) are readily and easily addressed in HTML sites. I have web designers on my team that could put this example together in less than 1/2 the time it would take a Flash/Flex developer and the resulting site would comply with all web standards including accessibility standards. Granted it would not have a few of the flashier (no pun intended) effects but arguably these are much less important than standards.
our company has built Flash/Flex sites in the past and gotten frustrated at how much effort is required just to get up to the level of standard HTML. however, we do use a lot of Flash to enhance our web sites; we just gave up on building complete sites using it.

Thank you very much JimmyCrackedCorn for your response.
As you can see I am not Flash programmer and I understand the problem of accessibility and standards, you are right in your observation. In the past I opposed to make full Flash site, I only use Flash for banners to enhance a little bit the site.
But I am tired to listen customers that do not know about these issues, telling me "I like my site like that one", a full Flash site, and to explain them the disadvantages of a site like that. I focus on the search engine inability to index the Flash inner pages. And I have customers that say: "I do not care, I want a Flash site."
Last year I proposed an open source solution, which also uses XML, that has the ability to output either to Flash or DHTML. My Idea was that CCS3 could use this open source framework as a graphical (presentation) front end handled by CCS3 XML output. I thought this could be a great solution for everyone. But I got a private message with a strong complaint from one CCS3 staff for promoting 3rd party products in the forum (?) .
What can I say?. I am not even a programmer, I only try to develop easy and good looking fast dynamic web sites. I tested Flex and in a day I was able to create a shell for a 4 web page with a multilevel dropdown menu. Of course copying and pasting code snippets.
And I presented that very basic Flash prototype to one customer along with my CCS3 prototype, and I convinced the customer that I can do Flash sites. But I told him that my non Flash prototype with CCS3 would be more convenient for him because was dynamic, controlled by him and good for the search engines. Fortunately the customer decided for my CCS3 proposal.
I hope Yes Software have chosen the best framework to integrate with CCS3 for developing not only excellent but also good looking RIA sites with CCS3.
Best regards

joejac,
I truly wish there was some way for me to make a living doing what I love (web and programming) but without the customers!!! :)
They either 1) do not know what they want and waste all of your time deciding or 2) know exactly what they want and refuse to listen to the professional they hired when they want something really dumb!
good luck with your work!
