Getting other values from a listbox

I have a listbox field that shows the item name using the item_id# as the primary key. I want to populate the item_id# number in a field on the form when the user selects a value from the list box. What is the best way to do this? Is there an example in the samples?

See BugTrack example , BugRecord page , it allows to change bug status
by selecting a value from listbox.
